Moving beyond researcher-turned-writer

For a while after leaving the lab to work as a technical and marketing writer, I still felt like a researcher who happened to be able to write well. However, after 8 years, my perspective has changed: I am a writer – a writer who understands science and thoroughly enjoys translating technical information into simple and exciting messages. Extensive experience creating technical and marketing collateral for biotech and industry, combined with a broad research background and science degrees form the perfect foundation for my work. I take great pleasure drawing from this history to create compelling content for my clients that is fun for their audience to read.

Automated handbook creation strategy

In biotech, growth and success often generates more work. Each new product requires creating a dedicated handbook – and keeping it up-to-date, a time-consuming task. I developed a strategy for my client to automate creation of many identical – yet slightly different – kit handbooks. Each content detail is stored only once – the shared details in small blocks of text in a global content library, and the varying details in a kit information matrix. A template references the source of each detail according to a defined structure and design. Documentation software uses the template to compile the final handbooks, pulling text from the library and matrix to “write” the files. And making updates is simplified: since the details are stored only once, they are easy to update, reducing human error and saving time.
